Fenland Clarion CC Easter Meet Review

Thanks to Steve Hope for the report…

The National Clarion Cycling Club held their Annual Conference at the Lady Anne’s Hotel in Stamford over the Easter Weekend. The club is made up of 25 sections across the country, with an Annual Conference and Easter Meet held at a different venue each year.

This year the club enjoyed the hospitality provided by Geoff Hastings at The Lady Anne’s Hotel, and important decisions were taken regarding the next 12 months in the club’s long history. The National Clarion Cycling Club was founded in 1895, and this year’s Meet, the 113th, was organised by the local Fenland Section who are based in Peterborough.

Over 70 delegates from across the country attended the weekend’s activities, with a large contingent from the local Fenland Section. The club enjoyed a Reception with the Mayor at the Town Hall, as well as both a Ghost Walk and a Town Walk around Stamford. The Clarion flag could be seen flying above the Town Hall on Friday night. Evening entertainment included local band “Out of the Blue” and The Annual Meal and Prize Presentation attended by the Mayor at The Lady Anne’. An array of Trophies were awarded to the prizewinners, including the Czechoslovakian Trophy for the Team Pursuit, which was originally awarded to the Clarion for their victory at the Workers Olympiad in Prague in 1921.

Unfortunately, the Cyclo-Sportive ride from Red Lion Square had to be postponed due to the 2 inches of snow that fell early on Sunday morning. The snow stopped at 9am but the 125 riders who had signed up for the ride will try again in early May.

The Time Trial where riders compete on their own against the clock, did however, take place from Essendine on Saturday. Here the Fenland section took a clean sweep, with Lyndon Leadbetter beating Dave Langlands by just 1 second, and Paul Asplin completing a good day for the locals.

Fenland Clarion CC Press Release –02/08

Fenland Clarion members Paul Asplin and Sharon Smith joined over 400 mountain bike riders this weekend at Thetford Forests High Lodge, to compete in the third event of their MTB Winter series.

Asplin had a great event and, despite battling against high winds and thick mud finished fourth in his category. He was competing against 110 other riders and managed to complete 4 laps of the strenuous 7.5 mile course in 2hours 28 min, only 8 min behind the winner.

Smith competed against 24 other women to come home in 14th position, completing 3 laps in 2hours 43min.

The last event of the winter series will be held on the 10th of February on the Brandon side of Thetford Forest, where Paul hopes to gain a podium finish for the series. With such an excellent start to the racing year the couple hope it will be good training for the upcoming Enduro6 race in April where they will be representing the Fenland Clarion club as a pair.

Annual Club Dinner and Prize Presentation.

Top British cycling professional Tony Gibb (front row third left) was on hand to present the Fenland Clarion Cycling Club prize winners with their awards at the clubs annual Dinner at Milton Golf Club.

Prize Winners 2008

Gibb, a member of the Plowman Craven/Evans Cycles team who has recently competed in the Tour of Britain and is a top winter track rider, was on hand for an after dinner question and answer session to give Clarion members an insight into the world of pro cycling.

The prizes were dominated by Ian Waddilove (see here winning the club place to place at Folksworth back in February) who collected 7 wins during the season and was rightly club champion. His notable victories included the big three distances, 10, 25 and 50 miles.
