Fenland Clarion Cycling Club Press Release 07-010

It was an early start for the Fenland Clarion members last Saturday, when they ventured south to the fast F1 course on the A1 at St Neots in search of fast times.

Rising as early as 4am for the six o’clock start, riders were disappointed to see wet conditions and a stiff wind for the Bedfordshire Road Club Ten Mile time trial.

Current Clarion fast man Ian Waddilove was fastest for the city club with  22.02, while Ian Clarke, who lives in nearby Biggleswade posted a 22.52.

Third counter in the Clarion team was Mike Shattock with a personal best 23.39.

Veteran John Royle notched a 24.29, while Steve Clarke produced his fastest for three seasons with a 24.49.

Lindsay Clarke missed her start and picked up a 31 second penalty, so her 25.01 would have been a reasonable 24.30.

Finally, fourth member of the Clarke family, Ian’s wife Jayne turned in a 26.11.

The following morning Ian & Jayne were in action again, in the Verulam Cycling Club 25 miler at Ware in Hertfordshire.

Fortunately the wind had dropped a little and conditions were more conducive to speed, with Jayne taking most advantage. The Lancashire lass was pleased to produce a 1.7.21 personal best on the undulating A10 course. Ian was in good shape too, but would have been choked to have missed beating the hour by 3 seconds, but it was still his quickest of the season.

Elsewhere on Sunday Clarion riders were involved in a 25 mile event over in Sleaford, with their riders posting competitive times.

Ian Waddilove 57.59
Paul Asplin 62.16
Simon Pidduck 63.14
John Royle 63.36
Malc Jacklin 63.54
James Fordham 66.34
Dave Saunders 67.14
Keith Kinsey 69.46
Birgit Scott 78.06
Sharon Smith 79.55

Busy Weekend for Clarion
IT’s another busy weekend for the Clarion as they organise the N&DCA 15 mile time trial on Saturday on the Old A1 between Stilton & Alconbury. The popular series event has attracted 77 riders from all over the area. The race starts at 2pm and the headquarters is at the Folksworth Village Hall.
On Sunday the Fenland organise their annual Grass Track Meeting in Biggleswade and some of the country’s top grass riders will be vying to win their share of the big prize list and gain points in National 8km Series counting race.
The meeting is being held at Stratton School and starts at 12 noon.

Taming the Dragon
3 Clarion riders took part in the Dragon Ride event in Wales at the end of June. Simon Pidduck and Martin Jones completed the 120 mile ride posting the following times.
Martin Jones – 6.32.36
Simon Pidduck – 8.10.47

Chris Wright did the 86 mile course and took 4.47.33.
