Georgina takes national championship
Fenland Clarion ladies rider Georgina Gardener took the National 10 mile time trial championship for her age category at Sawtry on Sunday.
Gardener showed no signs of fatigue having ridden her club championship on the Saturday afternoon and recorded a time of 29m54s to take the title. The city based club is justifiably proud to boast a national champion in its midst’s.
The club held their open 10 mile time trial on the previous day in blustery conditions over the same course based on the old A1 heading north to Stilton and back, and Fenland riders dominated. Ian Waddilove won with 22m45s, 10 seconds clear of Clarion club mate Martin Jones. St Ives rider Peter Galpin recorded 23m13 to take third.
Fenland riders took the first two places in the women’s event with Lindsay Clarke (25m28s) beating Jayne Clarke (27m19s) into second place.
Not surprisingly Clarion took the team prize with Waddilove, Jones, Simon Pidduck and Ian Clarke (both 23m07s) the counting riders.
A number of club members recorded personal bests. Prize winners Waddilove and Pidduck were joined by Malc Jacklin (24m51s), James Warrener (25m57s) and Simon Jacklin (27m56s).

Fenland Clarion Cycling Club riders have been busy over the bank holiday weekend in a variety of top level events around the region.
Making his debut in a road race was youngster Simon Jacklin (pictured) who completed his first ever road race coming 14th in the U-16 category in the Ixworth Criterium races.
Elsewhere, Clarion riders cleaned up the team prize in the Northants & District Cycling Assoc. 10 mile time trial. Martin Jones took fourth with 24m11s, which took account of a 45 second late start. Ian Waddilove with 24m22s and Ian Clarke 25m01s were the second and third counters for Clarion in claiming the team prize, both being in the top 12.
Steve Clarke and Jayne Clarke both experienced mechanical issues which thwarted their attempts to record a fast time.
Simon Pidduck, Mike Shattock, Lindsay Clarke, Dave Saunders, Bill Law, Ralph Stevens, Keith Kinsey and Birgit Scott were the other Clarion riders who rode the event.
Sunday saw some of those riders move on to the Icknield 25, which was held in windy conditions. Ian Clarke was best of the group recording 1hr 3m 56s. Lindsay Clarke was the third fastest woman.
