Fenland Clarion Cycling Club riders will be putting the finishing touches to their training in preparation for the 2007 season which kicks off at the end of February.
The first event on the agenda is the “Place to Place” (25th Feb 10am) which tests riders on the hilly back roads between Folksworth and Oundle.
March sees the club “Hardriders” (26th Mar 10am) which is based on the scenic and historic village of Fotheringhay. It will be a tough 13 miles of time trialling with one of the clubs strong men sure to prevail.
The focus then switches to the clubs spiritual home of Helpston with the start of the weekly “Bluebell 10″ series. Round one is on 11th April (6.45pm) and continues regularly until mid-August with only a couple of breaks for other promotions.
The highlight of the early-mid part of the season is the clubs 10 miles championship at Sawtry (19th May 2pm). The event is an ‘open’ which means there is likely to be a strong field lining up to challenge Clarion’s own riders. This field is likely to be further strengthened due to the National 10 mile championship being the next day on the same course. It could be that some of the best riders in the country will be riding to tweak their performance for a crack at the title on the Sunday.
Road racing enthusiasts will also be impressed by the events planned by the club for this season. Round 5 of the NCRA handicaps (1st Apr 10am) at Great Gidding is a club promotion as is round 1 of the NCRA summer series (5th June 7pm).
The season finishes with the traditional Helpston Classic (23rd Sept 1000) and Hill Climb event (7th Oct 1000) at Harringworth.
Fenland Clarion’s Racing Secretary, Steve Clarke is looking forward to the new season and commented, “Last season our club racing programme was extremely well supported, especially the popular Bluebell 10’s, where we were over subscribed on a couple of occasions. We are hoping for similar numbers this season.” Steve added, “The Wednesday night, Bluebell events are an ideal starting point for anyone wanting to get into cycle sport. All you need to do is turn up at Helpston on Wednesday night, sign on, pay your money and ride. It gives you a good benchmark to start from and there’s a friendly, non pressured atmosphere. You even get a cup of tea afterwards. Everyone’s welcome.”If you want to ride one of the Fenland Clarion races, you can contact Steve on 01733 252595
